It's been an amazing year here at Mend Mobility. We've helped so many of you get back on your feet (literally!) with our knee scooter rentals, and we've loved being part of your recovery journey. But we're always looking for ways to give you even better options, which brings us to some exciting news...
We're adding iWalk hands-free crutches to our rental collection! 🎉
If you've never heard of iWalk before, prepare to have your mind blown. This thing is basically like having a temporary peg leg that lets you walk around normally while your foot or ankle heals. No joke!
What the Heck is an iWalk?
Picture this: instead of hobbling around on crutches that make your armpits sore, or scooting around on a knee scooter, you strap this device to your upper leg. It becomes like an extension of your leg, so you can actually walk while keeping all the weight off your injured foot.
It sounds weird, but it's actually genius. Your injured foot just hangs there doing nothing (which is exactly what it should be doing while it heals), while you walk around almost normally. And here's the best part—your hands are completely free!
Why We're So Excited About This
Don't get us wrong—we absolutely LOVE our knee scooters, and they're still going to be perfect for tons of situations. They're amazing when you need to zip around longer distances, cruise around outside, or just want that comfy, stable ride. Plus, that front basket? Total game-changer for carrying stuff.
But we kept hearing about situations where even our awesome knee scooters had their limits. You know what I'm talking about:
Stairs. Ugh, stairs. With a knee scooter, you're back to hopping up on one foot. With iWalk? You just walk up like normal (okay, maybe holding the railing, but still!).
Tight spaces. Ever tried getting a knee scooter through a crowded restaurant or down an airplane aisle? Not fun. iWalk? No problem.
Just wanting to feel normal. Sometimes you just want to move around your house, play with your kids, or cook dinner without feeling like you're driving a vehicle around your kitchen.
When iWalk Might Be Your New Best Friend
You live in a house with stairs - This is huge. No more scooting to the bottom of the stairs and then hopping up like a kangaroo.
You're always on the go - Teachers, parents, anyone whose job involves moving around a lot. You can actually keep up with your normal routine.
Small spaces drive you crazy - Narrow hallways, crowded places, tiny bathrooms... iWalk just makes life easier.
You want your hands back - Cooking, carrying coffee, picking up toys, opening doors without doing some weird balancing act.
You're traveling - Getting in and out of cars, navigating airports, cramming into airplane bathrooms... so much easier.
But Seriously, What About Knee Scooters?
Look, we're not trying to replace knee scooters here. They're still fantastic for a ton of situations!
Knee scooters are still your best bet when you're covering lots of ground (like getting around a big office or mall), when you want maximum comfort for long periods, or when you're dealing with outdoor terrain. That basket up front is also clutch when you need to haul stuff around.
Think of it this way: it's like having a bike AND a car. Sometimes you want one, sometimes you want the other, and sometimes you might even switch between them during the same day!
The Real Talk About Recovery
Here's the thing about injuries—they're not just physical. They mess with your head too. You start feeling helpless, dependent, frustrated. We've seen it a million times.
What's cool about iWalk is that it gives you back a lot of that independence you're missing. You can move around your own space without constantly planning your route or asking for help. You can carry your own coffee cup! It sounds small, but trust us, it's not.
Is This Thing Actually Safe?
Totally fair question! Like any mobility aid, iWalk isn't right for everyone. You need decent balance and reasonable upper leg strength. And obviously, your doctor needs to be cool with whatever mobility option you choose.
But for the right person with the right injury? It can be a total game-changer. We'll make sure you get proper fitting and instruction—no one's leaving here without knowing exactly how to use it safely.
The Money Talk
Good news: just like our knee scooters, iWalk rentals are typically covered by insurance at about 80%. So even though this is pretty high-tech stuff, it's not going to break the bank.
